The Interview

What¹s Up Guys?
Our LP is on the way UP!!!

Do you prefer being labelled a D&B artists or electronic music artists?
When we make drum and bass we are drum and bass artists... when
we make breakbeat we are breakbeat artists

Tell us about your work this year and how bussiness is going in the UK and the global scene?
This year we have been writing shit loads of tunes and
we have our Stayfresh LP due to drop. Next year we are going to give our
breaks label Passenger the big push and make it famous across the world...
watch out for the fresh shit!

How are the Aquasky groupies?
They are fine, but they get a little sweaty in the box we keep em in

Was it hard starting up to be producers and make a living?
If you are determined and if you remember that you meet the same people on the way up as you meet on the way down and vise versa then it all works out. We like to be known as the good guys in the scenes we work in. You dont get any attitude from us (unless you be fucking with our groupies!)

What was one of the most valuable lessons that you guys learned from your experience that could be considered advice to other aspiring producers?
Try to get somewhere? It aint about being famous. It is about making music
you believe in and to forget all the bollocks that goes along with it (apart
from the groupies)

What do you think of the scene in the UK, is it getting bigger or are you getting the same amount of people you used to?
The breakbeat scene is still quite small over here. The drum and bass scene
is what attracts the crowds and luckily we can use our position in that as a
way to bring breakbeat to a larger audience

What role does each member play in the Aquasky team?
I (Brent) am the green keeper. Dave is the gate keeper. Keiron is the goal keeper

Are you all pleased with what you have earned in the industry so far?
We dont go much on earning points. We just sit in our studio and hammer out
the tunes. We are very pleased with the support we get the world over and we
always remember that the people that got us to where we are are the people
that support us. We always chat to people in the clubs and reply to the
emails we get sent. That could be used for your 'valuable lesson' answer as
well!!!

Any suggestions about over coming writers block?
Drugs, drink and groupies...

What are the inspirations to Aquasky's melodies in your tunes?
We all have massive record collections and we all listen to different music
to each other so there is never any problem in thinking up a melody. Just go
home and get inspired......................

How would you describe your sound?
Dancefloor

D&B and breaks on a worldly outlook is looking good, its in movies and commercials, do you see this as potential work/fame for you guys in the future?
We aint about getting famous. We have been at it for 10 years and we want to be at it for at least another 10. Once you get the fame you can then lose it. So dont go chasing what you might not be able to keep hold of. It is better to sit in the back and get the job done (but some famous groupies would be nice hey!)

All us wannabee djs and producers in Canada like to fart on each other...how about you guys?
We let our basslines do the farting for us ;)

Would you like it if your tracks were on a Mcdonalds add?
Only if Justin sang on it

Are there politics within the UK relm of producers?
There are politics in every walk of life. Especially in drum and bass. Breakbeat is cool though. We have met some moodies but generally the breakheads all seem pretty contented and eager to push the scene forward as a tight unit.

Where did the name Aquasky come from?
Jesus... we got signed to moving shadow and we didnt have a name, so we wrote loads of 'nice words' on a piece of paper and then joined em together. Aquasky fitted with the music we made then (jazzy jungle) so we went with that.

Do you think you guys will ever settle down, get a wife, live a relaxed life with a 9-5 job or will you be rockin till the end?
Ever seen the UK program 'Last of the summer wine'???

What does your studio consist of?
Equipment (and groupies in a sweaty box)

What is the state of the breakbeat scene on the global level in you opinions?
Nice, it is still young but there is so much potential to it. House music is
on the decline, so what better to replace it than some good old breakbeat...
yes yes

What do you think about the future, any insights?
I am worried about the whole American power thing... it will lead us all
into trouble

Is Aquasky affriad of anything?
Big spiders and midgets

Do you guys have time for girls?
We love the ladies and we make time for them more than we make time for our music. Why, you got some for us?

How much would it cost for an Aquasky remix for North Americans labels?
If the tune is rocking then it aint about the money. If the tune is shit then we wouldnt remix it!

How does a real musical background help in production?
It helps in many ways...

Do you guys produce as a full time job without having any other sort of job?
Yes

Ever see any ghosts in the UK...it is a very old place?
Yes, plenty... and UFO's!

Is it true the English think North Americans are lazy at production?
Never heard about that one to be honest. We have some very good artists signed to our Sonix/Incident labels.

What do you think of Canada?
Love it... we even named a tune after Halifax (Nova Scotia)

Are these enough questions?
Fuck yeah...

Does this interview suck?
Do my answers?
