The Interview

Do you remember the first track that got you hooked on breaks?
Baby Anne= no. breaks wasn't official when I got hooked on dance music.

Can you explain how the first scene in Florida was in the 90's?
Baby Anne= it was underground. everyone would go out late on Saturday night to hear Kimball play at Aahz until the sun came up. Every weekend!

How is the Breakbeat scene in Florida now in your opinion and how does that differ from the 90's breaks scene?
Baby Anne= Our scene is almost nonexistent today. Before the economy took a dive there were many places to go on any night of the week. Guest DJs frequented the clubs. Now Hip-hop is played everywhere and it is rare to have a special event with guest DJs.

How did you hook up with the legendary DJ Icey?
Baby Anne= In the 90's, Icey played at a club on Tuesday and Sunday nights.
My friends and I would always go to hear him play. He had a unique personality and was always fun to hang out with. We've been friends since then. The DJ/producing part came later.

How many releases have you participated in so far?
  Baby Anne= I'm not sure. 10? 15?

Did you study music in school?
Baby Anne= No!

Do you use music theory in anyway?
Baby Anne= no!

Is Breakbeat culture in the rise in the USA?
Baby Anne= No. every year someone says' "this is the year breaks will be big." I don't think things have changed much over the years in comparison to the other genres.

How does the UK scene differ from the USA?
Baby Anne= I have never been over there. They have some great producers, though. Rennie Pilgrim and Plump DJs.

Do you think that this past year has seen a considerable breakthrough
for breaks?
Baby Anne= I do not.

Do you see breakbeat music moving into a mainstream position soon?
Baby Anne= no. as time passes, the popularity of the entire dance
music scene may fluctuate, but I think breaks will remain the same in relation to it.

What current projects are you working on that you would like to talk about?
Baby Anne= I just finished a single and mix CD for system. both are called
'Mixtress'.

Where did your name Baby Anne come from?
Baby Anne= Unfortunately it was a nickname that stuck. I don't like it.

What do you think of North America?
Baby Anne= it's hot.

What do you think of these affordable music program suites like Reason, Fruity Loops, and Acid?
Baby Anne= I think they are fun and easy to learn on.

What are the inspirations behind your beats?
Baby Anne= it could be anything. I could be in an elevator and hear a good beat that will catch my attention. I'm not biased.

What did you listen to growing up before your fat breaks productions?
Baby Anne= 70's southern rock, 80's retro, 2 live crew, beastie boys.

PC or Mac?
Baby Anne= PC

Any plans for music videos?
Baby Anne= no way!

Do you just use drum loops for your breaks? Do you write them on computer, external sequencers etc.?
Baby Anne= all of the above.

Do you use allot of sample CDs for sounds?
Baby Anne= not so much. the sounds come from everywhere. I might look to a sample CD for a vocal sample.

When someone asks you, "What’s a Breakbeat?"...what do you say?
Baby Anne= I give them song examples.

Did you hit Spain or Australia yet?
Baby Anne= I have not. I'm not real big on out of the country travel.

Any white label bootlegging business?
Baby Anne= not personally. but I always have suggestions.

What's the hottest breaks night in Florida right now?
Baby Anne= Jimmy Joslin. House of Blues. Sunday nights.

Have you ever found your music on any mp3 servers such as Kazaa? And if so, how does this make you feel and how does this affect you?
Baby Anne= I have. it's never bothered me. I've had someone ask me to autograph a burned CD.

Future aspirations? Words of wisdom?
Baby Anne= I would like to own a diamond mine sometime in the future.
Words of wisdom... practice the golden rule, spay and neuter your pets.
