The Interview
How did you 3 meet up at first then to form the awsome team known as the Breakfastaz?
School
Which musical instruments have you guys touched before devastating the breakbeat areana?
Tuba, drums and keys
How did you guys come up with your name?
We called our first label Breakfast Beats cause froe likes food and is rolled on from there. We still enjoy breakfast. The best café in the world is up the road from our studio. It’s called The Walpole!!! South Ealing Road. Word.
How is the underground scene in the UK in your opinion?
Vibrent and multicultural
Where have the Breakfastaz travelled to so far?
And where was your favourte gig and why? Spain, America, Ireland, Italy and Belgium. Lots more coming in the next few months. Everytime we do a gig these days it seems to become our new favorite.
Do you guys have a normal job on the side of breaks?
Bits and Bobs. Two of us our students and one works with kids. Ahh. One of the kids is called Merk Kid. Ohh.
Anyone at work know about your alter egos?
Merk kid often mocks froe for his trance. But really he is envious of the success. Merk kid is too busy keeping it real to know what is really going on. Bad merk kid
Are you guys using the any form of external sampler, like for example the EMU Ultra Samplers for your fat productions or have you all gotton used to the ease of software samplers like Kontakt or the Esx24?
We use a Emu sampler to take up space in the hall outside our studio. Everything we do is on a Exs sampler.
Do you think that there is a difference between digtal and analogue or it just really doesnt matter anymore for you?
Digital is the way of the future. Analouge is yesterdays garbge truck.
How do you use your subs in your productions? Do you layer them under the kick drums or do you just find kick drums with subs already or do you layer them under your basslines?
We layer them under our basslines.
Do girls call you more frequently since you lads started playing out? If so do they talk to you or do they just giggle and hang up?
We have all got laid because of music and would recommend a carrear in music to anyone not getting any.
What computer platform do you work on? A PC or Mac and why?
Mac. Because.
What sequencer do you use? And why?
Logic. Because.
What's your main piece of studio gear and why?
G5 Apple. Because.
Do you see breakbeat music moving into a mainstream position soon?
It already is. Most chart dance is breakbeat one way or another. However, the underground side of the scene is essential and part of what makes it all work.
What current projects are you working on and would like to talk about?
Breakfastaz is our only project.
Who were your first inspirations that originally got you into Breaks?
Zinc and then The Freestylers
Where do you guys wish to go play out now?
Anywhere and everywhere. Especially canada
Is it really about the music in the UK or its really about the drugs?
A bit of both really. Fun. Fun, fun. Always remember those wise words. Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll.
Do the Mafias control the parties?
Yeah. Breaks and Mortar in Brixton is run by hoods.
Do you use the same vinyl manufacturer everytime you goto press with a new release?
We don’t press our tunes. Labels do.
What is your opinion on these music program suites(Fruity Loops, Reason, etc...), do they output real quality audio that would be efficient for any Breakfastaz productions?
There cool. We don’t really use them. But it’s all about the final product. Ugetme
How long did it take to learn and master all your equipment before you found the sound that you were looking for and you were comfortable enough to produce what you wanted?
We are always learning.
Any tips on making fatter basslines to make girls shake their booties?
Merk kid always walks up to the girls, looks them straight in the booty and says” Do you give out”. Always works.
Can you tell us about the Ravers in the UK...any funny stories to share?
Most involve piss or shit and so would be unsuitable. Every weekend we come back with another set of funny stories mainly involving ourselves. But we always forget them by Thursday so have to do it all over again.
Do you think girls like breaks more than Drum and Bass?
Fuck yeah. Because.
Have you ever worked with an MPC to produce drum loops?
No.
Do you use a lot of sample CDs for sounds?
No.
Do you synthesize allot of your own sounds?
No.
Have you ever found your music on any mp3 servers such as Kaza? And if so, how does this make you feel and how does this affect you?
Yes. We get pissed off. Then we give up getting pissed off. Then we look after our CDR’s more carefully.
Are there any candy ravers left? And if so... would you touch their pants?
I aleays touch pants. But remember, always use protection. But if you don’t….. fuck it anyway.
How did you feel when you first dj-ed in Spain in front of a massive crowd? What was the experience like?
Religious. I felt like a god.
How did you lads hook up with BreaksFM?
Through Dj Quest
Any future aspirations or Words of wisdom?
