The Interview

Do you like the Internet?
We will do - in 4 years time!

Do you think that there's too much pornography on the Internet?
It's there because there is a need for it and the quantity is governed by human nature.

How was the reaction at work a few years back at your "normal jobs", when the two of you released your first noticeable hit record? did you guys even have "normal jobs"?
There were times when we had normal jobs though we have never released a hit record as the Plump DJs. We make specialist underground dance music!

Is the new album stirring up as much of a fuss as a plump night out? (note: a plump night out was rated mix mags #1 breaks album of y2k)
Dance music is having a hard time at the moment but we have sold 30,000 Eargasm albums worldwide in the first month. It took a year to sell that many of "A Plump Night Out"!

How do you feel about your publicity for the new LP?
It has been inconsistent because an unfinished copy of the album got into the hands of some reveiwers. All who heard the final album gave rave reviews!

Is Eargasm is more of an electro album rather than breaks?
No. By electro I assume you mean 808 electro. We only use an 808 drum machine for 10 seconds in the whole album.

The graphic design on your covers are very nice, who does your design?
The Kitchen designed our album cover. The idea was to look sinister and sexy.

Did you attend music school or, have any musical training prior to plump dj's?
Andy went to Kingston University to study as a Sound Technician
Lee - none!

Did your popularity change you guys in anyway?
We got a little plumper! Hopefully our friends will tell us if we change for the worse.

Did girls call you more frequently? If so do they talk to you or do they just giggle and hang up?
Yes they call more frequently - they talk to us.

Is it true only fish and chips are the only good thing to eat in the UK?
No - curry!

What about bangers and mash??
mmm, lovely.

Your opinion what is the definition of a break beat?
A drum beat paced around a broken pattern. I.e. not 4/4

Do you have to be a geeky-nerd to make it in electronic music?
No!

Ever dated a stripper?
Yes!

What sort of future do you see for your duo?
Bright.

Do you only work as a duo? Have you ever worked or considered working independently from each other?
No.
Andy - Cut & Paste, Bowser, Thwomp, Strike
Lee -

Do you feel that the incorporation of vocals in your tracks is helping the progression of breaks to attract a wider range audience?
Yes, though that for us is unintentional.

Are breaks really spreading globally?
Yes

What's up with the white labels? Do these artists know that they are being remixed? Does it matter?
No, s'all good fun.

Have you met any beautiful models while djing around the world?
Yes

What do you think of North America?
Never been

What do you think of jihad? and the state of the wold right now? Is there any political motivation behind your music?
No, music for us is an escape from the negativity in the world.

What are the inspirations behind your beats?
Funk, disco, techno, electro, hip hop

What did you listen to growing up before your fat breaks productions?
In order - disco, 80's pop, hip hop, house/rave, now, breakbeat.

What is your studio built up with? What gear are you guys rockin'?
Not telling you! Lots of things with a wood finish!

How long did it take to learn and master all your equipment before you found the sound that you were looking for comfortable to produce what you two wanted?
Still learning.

Do you use logic audio or performer? What other software do you use?
Logic - none!

Are you guys using mac os X?
Mac OS 9

What do you think of PC's?
We think of macs.

Do you think knowing synthesis is necessary when producing or do you think its not entirely necessary? What is the extent of your knowledge on the subject.
Knowing how something is made helps you create. E.g Architects that know how to lay bricks will do a better job!

What type of compressors and mastering tools do you use to make your tracks nice and "plump"?
Not telling you!

Any tips on making fatter breaks?
Spend more time on the drums..

Do you guys just use drum loops for your breaks? Do you write them on computer, external sequencers etc.?
Combine old loops and modern loops.

Do you use alot of sample cds for sounds?
What's a lot? We use some..

Do you guys synthesize allot of your own sounds?
Yes

Do you mates live together?
No

Are you guys down with DA BOOM SOUND(dnb)?
huh?

Are there any candy ravers left? And if so... would you touch thier pants? Would you let them touch your pants?
What's a candy raver?

How did you guys get the opportunity to play at the Love Parade? What was the experience like?
A must see!

Future aspirations?Words of wisdom?
We want to continue finding new ways of making people dance! "Be good!"
