Breakbeat.ca DJ Bio Jan 2006

Somsay grew up urban at heart, by skateboarding since 1990 and was into death metal, and punk rock–interested in things that were different and underground. By 1992, he was exposed to the hip-hop culture, then got into graffiti, DJing, and raving all at the same time. Later drawn towards electronic music by Montreal’s early breakbeat-rave scene, so he started to collect and study many dj/producer interviews from music magazines. Constantly listening and taping the legendary “Tiga and Gnat” radio show, the first underground-electronic music radio station on air in Montreal at that time.

Somsay started out making his own beats using drum machines in 1992. This inevitably taught Somsay about the Breakbeat drum pattern. By 1999, he had worked hard to obtain some production gear to finally be able to integrate his drumbeats with sounds and is currently studying Logic Audio and sound engineering in his home studio as a hoby.

In 1995, Somsay started a urban clothing line called. “Ethikal” and was DJ A-Trak’s first sponsor, and you can still see A-Trak wearing his clothing in the 1997 world DMC championships where he won the DMC at the age of 16. Somsay’s friends were mostly Hip-hop, House, and Drum and Bass DJs, therefore he started collecting records, and promoting and organizing all night Hip-Hop, and Drum & Bass parties in rave rooms and in club nights in Montreal since 1995. By 1996, he was soured by the commercialism of Hip-hop, Techno, and House music, so he decided to commit to Breakbeats from the inspiration of breakbeat dj /producers pioneers such as; DJ Dan, DJ Icey, Simply Jeff ,and the Crystal Method. Breakbeat is diverse and can be formed into any style and was not commercial which soothed Somsay’s tastes for something different.

By 2000, the rave and club scene took a dive to the ground, but Somsay still tried hard to DJ and promote Breakbeats in Montreal and had a successful weekly club night at the well known club Angels in Montreal. After the beating of Somsay’s partner by a bouncer, he simply gave up the club night. From then on the scene in Montreal was hurting so he decided to use his skills in web/graphic design to make a webzine to help expose Breakbeat culture to Montrealers, www.breakbeat.ca, which was inspired by the unforgettable www.breaksworld.com
